In the upcoming Fourth Drought Adaptation Forum organized by UNISDR Regional Office for Africa and UNDP DDC from 13 to 14 October 2011 in Nairobi, Kenya, we will discuss among other topics "gaps and challenges in existing funding mechanisms for long-term drought mitigation measures". It is often mentioned that while there is development funding and humanitarian funding, there is no funding mechanism in place which can be activated when very early predictions are received that a drought might happen. In the case of the current Horn of Africa drought, first indications were received late 2010, but little early action followed. One reason for this could be that it is difficult to fund long-term drought mitigation measures. Read More...

Engineers without Borders: Development, CC, and infrastructure report
Climate Compatible Development in the Infrastructure Sector
Climate change is recognised as one of the most significant threats to development during the 21st Century and beyond. This applies both to mitigation, i.e. reducing greenhouse gas emissions in ways that facilitate continued growth and sustained poverty reduction; and to adaptation, i.e. protecting vulnerable populations from the impacts of climate change. This report provides an overview of the challenges and opportunities at the nexus of climate change, infrastructure and development. Read More...
