drought & climate forum

In the upcoming Fourth Drought Adaptation Forum organized by UNISDR Regional Office for Africa and UNDP DDC from 13 to 14 October 2011 in Nairobi, Kenya, we will discuss among other topics "gaps and challenges in existing funding mechanisms for long-term drought mitigation measures". It is often mentioned that while there is development funding and humanitarian funding, there is no funding mechanism in place which can be activated when very early predictions are received that a drought might happen. In the case of the current Horn of Africa drought, first indications were received late 2010, but little early action followed. One reason for this could be that it is difficult to fund long-term drought mitigation measures. Read More...

Ecosystem-based adaptation approaches workshop and panel

Ecosystem-based Approaches to Adaptation:
Current and Innovative Methodologies for Implementation Action

Ecosystem-based approaches to Adaptation (EbA) have emerged as one suite of solutions to help many of the world’s most vulnerable regions buffer the worst impacts of climate change, maintain the resilience of natural ecosystems, their ecosystem services and the species that support them, and help people adapt to changing conditions.
While various approaches for determining the necessity and feasibility of adaptation measures have been considered as part of EbA planning, new and innovative methodologies are being generated to address growing socio-economic and environmental complexities, at which Conservation International (CI) is at the forefront.
Please join CI and learn from a panel of experts about what is working and what is still needed to make EbA a lasting solution to climate change vulnerability.
