Hydrologist/programmer position

The Western States Water Council (WSWC) is looking to fill an open Hydrologist/Programmer position. The WSWC is looking for an energetic recent or near graduate in hydrology with an interest in, as well as experience with computer programming. The project will focus on helping the western states develop a water use and water availability data exchange. The purpose of this is to help the western states be in a better position to support the Department of Energy's water for energy studies and USGS's Water Census as well as other water availability and water planning studies. These types of data have historically been one of the weak links in the suite of water data, and the western states are committed to try to address these issues. Read More...

drought & climate forum

In the upcoming Fourth Drought Adaptation Forum organized by UNISDR Regional Office for Africa and UNDP DDC from 13 to 14 October 2011 in Nairobi, Kenya, we will discuss among other topics "gaps and challenges in existing funding mechanisms for long-term drought mitigation measures". It is often mentioned that while there is development funding and humanitarian funding, there is no funding mechanism in place which can be activated when very early predictions are received that a drought might happen. In the case of the current Horn of Africa drought, first indications were received late 2010, but little early action followed. One reason for this could be that it is difficult to fund long-term drought mitigation measures. Read More...

Conference on climate variability

ESF Research Conference Announcement:
Modes of Variability in the Climate System: Past - Present - Future

27 May - 1 June 2012, Obergurgl, Austria

The ongoing climate warming requires a detailed understanding of global and regional climate variations and forecasting of their future changes using climate models. These changes pertain not only to the average global warming but also to changes in regional climate, circulation patterns and their temporal variability. To decrease the uncertainty in these model predictions, climate models have to be validated using paleoclimate data as provided by natural climate archives. Spatially representative climate modes and teleconnection patterns and their temporal variability allow for this validation and represent the vehicles to contrast rather coarsely resolved climate models to point-wise paleoclimate data.
