OECD Report on Development & Adaptation
30/06/09 15:48 Filed in: Report
In late May,
the OECD hosted a meeting on the
environment and development and a report of the
proceedings has just been released. Of critical
interest is the report on integrating adaptation
into development cooperation. The perspective
reflects primarily that of that “donor nations
in regard to the UNFCCC.
The report is available here.

Aspen Institute Report: Sustainable Water Use
29/06/09 18:08 Filed in: Report
The Aspen
Institute
PDF of the Report
From the Foreword:
America’s drinking water and wastewater systems face increasing challenges in maintaining and replacing their pipes, treatment plants, and other critical infrastructure. Prolonging and renewing the nation’s high-quality water services requires a clear sense of what is a sustainable water infrastructure, the amount of investment needed to create and preserve it, where investments should be made, and by whom. In 2008 and 2009 the Aspen Institute convened a multi-stakeholder dialogue to help provide clarity and promote leadership on these issues.
With few exceptions, everyone shares the goals of ensuring clean and safe drinking water for all communities, protecting the natural environment, and making certain that the nation’s water infrastructure benefits from sustained investment. Keeping these shared values in the forefront of our Aspen Dialogue was essential as the group examined the subordinate issues on which positions differed. In this case, the shared values and differing positions led to new thinking about an
expanded definition of water infrastructure, and by implication, what investments are needed to provide a more holistic approach to sustainable water infrastructure.

Adaptation and Biodiversity Law: Archived Talks
On June 3, 2009 the
Environmental Law Institute hosted an International
Roundtable Discussion on the question posed in the
subject heading: “What does adaptation to climate
change mean for biodiversity law?” This discussion
is part of an ongoing project at ELI to identify
options and make recommendations for countries
seeking to build adaptive capacity into the
governance of their biological resources. Working
with environmental law and policy experts from
around the world, we are currently developing a
Toolkit for regulatory authorities and
stakeholders, and a Report for policymakers (drafts
planned for release Spring 2010).

Tropical Cyclones/Hurricanes and Climate Change Forum

| Virtual
At
the forum -
Hurricane Science for Safety Leadership Forum:
Safe Homes For All -
we’ve aligned some strange bedfellows to come
together to discuss these land use, environmental
and social challenges. Panelists include
environmentalists, government officials, free
market thinkers, and insurance
representatives. We anticipate lively, yet
constructive discussions focused on solutions based
strategies to natural disaster risk mitigation and
how best to balance the needs of communities with
the protection of sensitive ecosystems (and
hopefully some great angles for your blog posts).
The topics are quite timely as we’ve just entered
the Atlantic hurricane season and many important
environmental and social challenges need to be
addressed by the nation.

Urban, Asian Adaptation Network
AdaptNet is RMIT
University Global Cities Institute's Climate Change
Adaptation Working Group network focused on urban
climate change adaptation. This decentralized
network creates a set of common knowledge and
reference points for participants in the network;
it offers a stock of such knowledge, and either
offers tools or direct users to tools to
undertake urban climate change adaptive policy research and analysis. AdaptNet highlights best practice and demonstration projects. It focuses on cities in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region, but nested within the global network of cities.

SEI adaptation course

The Climate Systems
Analysis Group at the University of Cape Town and
the Stockholm Environment
Institute, partners in weADAPT and the Global Climate
Adaptation Partnership, are offering a 2-week
“winter school” in the use of climate
information for developing adaptation
strategies, plans and policies. The winter
school will take place from 13 to 26 July 2009,
and is designed to provide a balance between
seminar style teaching and hands-on training,
supported by leading climate scientists and
adaptation experts, using the weADAPT platform
for developing the curriculum. We aim to provide
an overview of the latest relevant climate
science as well as working through sector
specific case studies and experiences of the
application of this knowledge in acting to
reduce risks. The winter school is supported
financially by UNITAR and SENSA.
